On Friday August 1, Wagga Mutual Credit Union presented $185,000 to 148 local, non-profit community organisations as part of its annual celebration of community: the Community Sponsorship Account (CSA) Presentation Night.

This distribution was the largest ever and brings the total amount invested in the region to over $600,000 in the 7 years the program has been running. Graeme Thompson, Chair of Indue Limited, the major sponsor of the event, announced that the program is on track to contribute $1,000,000 to the region by 2010.

With 300 locals joining in the festivities, the feeling of community was palpable. The guests were entertained by local talent from amongst the Community Sponsorship Account recipient organisations, including the Murrumbidgee String Orchestra, Wagga Wagga Jazz Festival, and the Conservatorium of Music. Guests were also treated to a wonderful performance by regular fixtures of the event, the Timeless Tappers with special guest, Wagga Mutual Chief Executive Officer Glenn Elliot. This performance included a CSA version of the song, “Hello Dolly”!

Another highlight from the evening was the ‘Peter and Helen Walsh Most Passionate Saver’ Award. This award was presented by Chair of Wagga Mutual, John Harding, to the winners West Wagga Catholic Parish, represented by Father Gerard Ryan. John Harding thanked the Walsh Family for allowing the ‘Most Passionate Saver’ Award to be dedicated to Peter and Helen Walsh, noting that they are both still sorely missed around the community and are remembered fondly by all at Wagga Mutual. The ‘Peter and Helen Walsh Most Passionate Saver’ is awarded each year to the recipient organisation that has had the highest percentage growth in average annual balance, which represents the ability to harness the passion of their supporter base.

Wagga Mutual Chairman John Harding said “The CSA has allowed Wagga Mutual to continue to contribute to the local community. Wagga Mutual is proud to be the community champion in the towns in which we operate. A recent national survey has identified Wagga Mutual as being the leading Credit Union in terms of community investment both per member and per staff member.  We return more to the region in both dollar terms and as a percentage of profit than any other financial institution.”

Chief Executive Officer Glenn Elliot said the Community Sponsorship Account is a simple way for the supporters of worthwhile charitable, sporting, cultural and other deserving organisations can help themselves and the organisations they love at the same time.

The account pays up to 6 per cent per annum and a 1 per cent bonus to the recipient organisation based on the average of all the balances invested for the benefit of that organisation. The bonus is calculated on June 30 each year.
