Thousands of Vietnam Veterans and their families gathered around the nation on Wednesday 18 August to remember mates who made the supreme sacrifice during the Vietnam War. Wagga was no exception where around 100 people, old diggers proudly wearing their service medals along with members of the public, congregated at the Victory Memorial Gardens for a moving ceremony of remembrance.

Vietnam Veteran's DayVietnam Veterans' Day had a special significance this year as it is 40 anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan the single most significant battle for Australia in the Vietnam War. Just over 100 courageous Australian Soldiers of Delta Company 6 RAR were patrolling near the village of Long Tan when they encountered a Viet Cong and North Vietnamese force about 25 times their number, and a fierce battle ensued. The Australians, with customary valour beat the odds and won the fight. Long Tan is seen today not only as a notable moment in Australia's military history, but also as a time to publicly recognise all veterans from Australia's controversial decade-long involvement in Vietnam.

After the Chaplain’s blessing and prayer Colonel Wilkie, Commandant of Kapooka Army Recruit Training Centre delivered a poignant account of the battle which left us in no doubt about the horrors of the conflict. It put in context the courage of those who served and it underpinned our reason for attending the service. For the full text of Colonel Wilkie's Speech

Given the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful crisp morning in Wagga, our gathering silently watched the laying of wreaths. This was led by Colonel Wilkie and Wing Commander Jenny Fantini, Commander of RAAF Base Wagga who were joined by Daryl Maguire and Kay Hull in commemorating the fallen and their noble sacrifice.

The Last Post by the bugler and the ensuing moments silence allowed us to contemplate the solemnity of what we had just seen and heard and the importance of eternal vigilance. The quid pro quo however; must be that we are prepared to cherish and support those who are ready to valiantly fight for and defend our freedom.
