NSW Parenting program- Families graduate
17/12/09
The first families to take part in the NSW Parenting Program in Wagga Wagga graduated Thursday 17 December.
The NSW Parenting Program is part of a NSW Health initiative offering free healthy lifestyle courses for overweight children aged seven to 13 years and their families.
The program commenced in Wagga Wagga in mid-October with local families taking part in fun two-hour sessions, twice a week over nine weeks. The program addresses eating and exercise habits to improve children's fitness, physical activity, nutrition and self-esteem.
Wagga Wagga Health Service Dietitian Niki Weston said: "The children and their families have really enjoyed the weekly interactive sessions, particularly learning new ways to become fit and healthy, exploring the local supermarket for healthy food choices and learning how to cook healthy foods at home."
"It has been fantastic to see the children's confidence increase during the program. They are more willing to participate in group discussions, have the skills and knowledge to make healthy food choices and enjoy getting outside and being active."
"The parents and carers had fun while learning new skills on how to help their child make positive lifestyle choices which benefit the whole family," Ms Weston said.
Families interested in participating in 2010 should contact Natalie Cross on 6932 3095 or visit the website: www.mendprogramme.org and click on 'Join a MEND Program'.
Please note a parent or carer must accompany each child to every session.
