Hats off to Heather and Dave Wall
Dear Music Lovers,
The RCM congratulates Heather and David Wall on their wonderful show at the Civic Theatre.
As part of the Cabaret Wollundry Series, Heather and David present a balanced program of cabaret and jazz numbers in the atmospheric upstairs foyer at the Civic Theatre. The show which commenced last Thursday evening, demonstrates that these two fine artists are not only outstanding music educators but professional performers of the highest calibre.
Heather is best known as the Head of Vocal studies at the Riverina Conservatorium where she has taught some of the most significant young artists the region has produced. However, this show tells us why her students are so fine. From the first song through to the closing encore, Heather commanded the stage with only the piano as accompaniment.
Her vocal capacity easily managed the startling range of styles presented and at times nearly was the voice of her own idol Ella Fitzgerald. However, as an artist Heather maintained a firm interpretive hold on the material, bringing something new to each work. The performance was engaging and witty (albeit occasionally art my expense) and a true testament to the fact that those that can do teach!
David Wall is easily the finest Jazz pianist in the region and his superb playing both supported and enhanced Heather’s vocal lines. David’s knowledge of the repertoire is astounding and his technical control and skill is tremendous. From intricate passages through to tumultuous fortes, David maintained a discreet balance and accompanied with sensitivity and artistry.
Bravo to a great show!
If you are interested in hearing this great, local duo, there are three more performances on Thursday 19, Friday 20 and Saturday 21 March. Tickets are available at the Civic Theatre.
Don’t forget that on the 5th April the RCM will present more local artists in the first recital in the 2009 Series featuring Clare Brassil, Lauren Davis and Hamish Tait. (www.rivconmusic.org.au)
