Hampden Bridge safe and secure

Wagga Wagga City Council has completed works on Hampden Bridge to make it safe and structurally sound, paving the way for the re-opening of the Wiradjuri Walking track underneath the bridge.

The work undertaken by Council in conjunction with engineering advice to ‘deload’ selected timber trusses within the bridge to eliminate pressures on the structure has been a resounding success, said Acting Director of Infrastructure Services, Mr Lindsay Tanner.

“Those with an interest in the Bridge would have noticed sections of the bridge had twisted as a result of damaged timber trusses applying a torque load along the bridge span,” Mr Tanner said.

“To look at the bridge now, with the recent remedial works completed, you can see the twist is no longer present, certain sections have been significantly lifted and structural supports required under the bridge for some years now are no longer required.

“Engineering advice has now deemed the bridge structurally sound, providing Council and the community with valuable time to fully assess the future of the Bridge as part of the Riverside Wagga Wagga Master Plan process.”

Structural work undertaken was completed on time and within the $55,000 budget, and was funded through the Hampden Bridge Rehabilitation Budget allocated in the 2008/09 budget.

The remaining site clean up work will be undertaken in the coming weeks by Council staff and once complete the Wiradjuri Walking Track will be re-opened.
