Staying active keeps Wagga local on her feet
Tuesday 23 March 2010
Wagga Wagga residents are reaping the benefits of gentle exercise from a Greater Southern Area Health Service falls prevention initiative.
Helen Tregea has improved her mobility at a regular volunteer led class despite her osteoporosis, poor balance, painful walking and history of falls.
Ms Tregea was encouraged by several friends to get active in 2003. She now participates in light exercise weekly including Tai Chi.
"Tai Chi has always interested me and I felt this was a very good opportunity to join a class," she said.
"My balance has improved, I've had fewer falls and the increase in my energy levels is noticeable. There is a great sense of well-being after classes which encourages me to continue going along.
"Arthritis pain can sometimes dampen my motivation but both improve after a class. I have a greater sense of control over my pain rather than feeling there is nothing you can do about it," Ms Tregea added.
Tai Chi volunteer instructor Merrin Moran said concentrating on learning new movements during the class can be a distraction from pain.
"The classes are great to manage arthritis and improve mood. Many new friendships form in the group and the laughter is a good sign everyone is having fun."
"I strongly encourage anyone looking to learn a new activity and have fun with a group to come along," Ms Moran said.
The GSAHS Tai Chi program is delivered by volunteers and offers gentle exercise for older adults to assist in improving their physical, social and mental wellbeing.
Ms Moran leads a class in Wagga Wagga at 10:15am Fridays at the Ethel Forrest Day Centre in Lewisham Ave.
